Quatuor Danel has something special planned for us: From 4 to 8 February 2019, they will be performing all 17 string quartets by Mieczysław Weinberg in the Amphithéâtre of the Philharmonie de Paris. A wonderful treat for all chamber music aficionados! And just in time for the Polish-Russian composer’s centenary year.  The Belgian quartet, founded in 1991, has been promoting Weinberg’s music for a long time and has contributed significantly to its distribution. Not just the audiences are excited, the press is equally full of praise for the Recording of the complete string quartets by Quatuor Danel: “Hearing these quartets played with such intensity as they are by... [read more]

German Premiere for Weinberg’s Symphony No. 22

Conductor Thomas Sanderling is a long-standing supporter of composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg. In 2015, he even founded the “International Mieczysław Weinberg Society” which aims to promote the works of the often underestimated Polish-born composer. Not without success, either: Weinberg’s Symphony No. 22, his last symphony, will now see its German premiere in Berlin, performed by the Konzerthausorchester conducted by Sanderling himself. The impressive work initially remained unfinished after Weinberg’s death to then be orchestrated by Kirill Umansky in 2003. Something to look forward to! The concert will be broadcast live by Deutschlandfunk Kultur from 20:03 h.  [read more]

Juan Orrego-Salas turns 100!

It is today, on 18 January 2019, that Chilean composer Juan Orrego-Salas celebrates his 100th birthday. Born 1919 in the Chilean capital Santiago de Chile, he initiated his studies in piano and composition in his native city at age 19, later obtaining diplomas in architecture and musicology. After having lived in the USA for a few years, Orrego-Salas returned to his home country and worked as a professor at the Faculty of Arts of Universidad de Chile from 1947. In later years, he worked as a music critic, founded the Chilean ‘Instituto de Musica’ and then became the head of the ‘Latin American Music Center’ at Indiana University. Shortly before his 70th birthday, he gave up teaching and has... [read more]

Feeling chilly in January? Go to Frankfurt/Oder and Potsdam for some musical heat this month: Conducted by Spanish conductor Pablo Mielgo, the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt will be playing fiery Latin American sounds, accompanied by a tango performance. An event in the afternoon titled ‘When the Winter does the Tango’ will take all children on a musical journey to South America. So, see you in Brandenburg!  [read more]
