Weinberg's opera 'The Passenger' for the first time in Israel

Save the date: On 30 April 2019, the 2010 Bregenz version of Weinberg’s Opera The Passenger by David Pountney will see its first performance at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv. American conductor Steven Mercurio will be directing the Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion. The Bregenz version has been adapted by various other opera houses and has been on stage in Warsaw, London, Houston, Chicago, Detroit and Miami. A first Israeli performance of this opera, which revolves around the persecution of Jewish people in the Third Reich, is most certainly going to be a highlight in the Weinberg Centenary Year.   [read more]

The Passenger: Weinberg’s Opera Premieres in Braunschweig

It is the second premiere for Mieczysław Weinberg’s opera ‘The Passenger’ in the centenary year 2019: On 6 April, the curtain goes up at Staatstheater Braunschweig on a new production by director Dirk Schmeding under the musical direction of Christopher Lichtenstein. The performances will be accompanied by a comprehensive supporting programme: In cooperation with the Schillstraße Concentration Camp Subcamp Memorial and the Jewish community, readings, talks, city tours, films and lectures on the subject will offer additional insights into the history of Braunschweig under the NS regime. Nordic Pulse Tour with Violin Concerto No. 1 by Gediminas Gelgotas

Today is the start of a tour that will take Violin Concerto No. 1 by Lithuanian composer Gediminas Gelgotas on a journey to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Russia. Just like in the successful 2018 premiere, Kristjan Järvi will be presenting the most recent work by Gelgotas with the Baltic Sea Philharmonic and violinist David Nebel. The ‘Nordic Pulse Tour’ is going to take the orchestra to venues such as the Palanga Concert Hall in Lithuania, the modern Mariinsky II in St. Petersburg which was only inaugurated in 2013, and Alvar Aaltos Finlandia Hall in Helsinki.   [read more]

Premiere for Weinberg in Gera: The Passenger

Of course, in Weinberg’s Centenary Year his impressive opera on guilt, suppression and responsibility which the composer based on the novel by Polish Auschwitz survivor Zofia Posmysz is an absolute must: The Passenger premieres on 8 March at Gera Theatre. Conducted by GMD Laurent Wagner and directed by Kay Kuntze, Weinberg’s opera will be staged as part of the series Wider das Vergessen (“Lest they be forgotten”) and on the occasion of the composer’s centenary.  [read more]
