Sol Gabetta on Tour with Weinberg’s Cello Concerto

Cellist Sol Gabetta is going on tour with Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Cello Concerto op. 43. She will be accompanied by the Orchestre Philharmonic Radio France, conducted by Finn Mikko Franck. The tour kicks off tonight at the Kölner Philharmonie; further stops include Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Vienna, Munich, Hannover and as a culmination the Philharmonie de Paris. Weinberg wrote his dark and melancholy Cello Concerto in 1948. Premiered by old master Mstislav Rostropovich in 1957, the work was considered an insider tip for the longest time and only found its way into concert halls rather late. UK Premiere for Weinberg’s Symphony No. 21

Finally: Today, Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Symphony No. 21 will see its UK premiere. The Polish composer’s highly anticipated symphony subtitled “Kaddish”, completed in 1991, was his last great orchestra work and will be premiering tonight at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. Weinberg dedicated his symphony to the Holocaust victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. Soprano Maria Makeeva and Kremerata Baltika will be conducted by Latvian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.
