Mohammed Fairouz: Follow, Poet

© Deutsche Grammophon

On January 27, 2015 the Deutsche Grammophon has published the new CD from Mohammed Fairouz titeled "Follow, Poet". This is the first recording of the young, american composer by the Yellow Label. Furthermore with this album Universal Music Classics inaugurates the new serie "The Return to Language".

For Elisabeth Sobol, Universal Music Classics President/CEO, it was only natural that the series "The Return to Language" be launched with Fairouz’s album. "It has always been the interrelatedness of literature and music that has touched me most deeply in art – the exponential power of storytelling when you join words and music”, she says. The works by Fairouz realize this combination of text and music on a special way.

The album "Follow, Poet" includes the song cycle "Audenesque" and the ballet "Sadat". Conducted by Evan Rogister we are hearing the interpretation of the mezzo soprano Kate Lindsey and the New York City chamber orchestra Ensemble LPR. In "Audenesque", Fairouz sets verse by the English poet W.H. Auden and late Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet Seamus Heaney; with "Sadat", the composer evokes in an instrumental work the stirring life-story of slain Egyptian president Anwar Sadat. These musical works are combined with readings of Auden and Heaney and fragments of spoken word by John F. Kennedy.

"DG boasts that he is the youngest composer to have an entire album of his compositions recorded for the label. Fairouz's five-part ballet on the life of [Anwar El] Sadat is both tuneful and reverent. The composer's work crackles with originality and humanity. Fairouz uses the marimba liberally, giving his piece a hue of phantasm."  C. Michael Bailey, allaboutjazz
