Mathias Spahlinger has been awarded the “Grand Art Prize” of the Berlin Academy of Arts
The Grand Art Prize 2014 is the highest honor of the Academy of Arts for Matthias Spahlinger's artistic lifetime achievement.
The statement of the jury: “Spahlinger’s work combines artistic responsibility and socio-political consciousness in an outstanding way. The music gains its power from the systematic endeavor to bring forth the mechanisms of the conditions of formation that lie beneath the surface of phenomena, and to transform them into incredible sonic inventions.”
The prize has been presented by the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, and the President of the Academy of Arts, Klaus Staeck on 18 March 2014 in Berlin.
“Mathias Spahlinger’s engagement with the social and political implications of art/new music have sometimes led him to radical positions, which at the same time, however, are always characterized by a great musical presence and a specific kind of sensuality and emotionality.” Clemens Gadenstätter
